TheGreenbrier River Trailis a 78-mile former railroad line with uninterrupted hiking, biking and horseback riding opportunities. The trail cuts through some of the most remote areas in the state making this the perfect escape from reality. TheGreenbrier State Forest covers 5,200 acres of secluded wilderness. Outdoor activities include hiking, biking, fishing, hunting and swimming.Care for a round of golf? Visit one of the picturesque courses at The Greenbrier Resort, where greats like Arnold Palmer and Sam Snead have played.

History

Named for surveyor Andrew Lewis, the area was the site of several battles during Lord Dunmore’s War, the 1774 conflict between the Colony of Virginia and Shawnee and Mingo American Indian nations. Later the town would play an important role during the Civil War, when several of its buildings were commandeered as hospitals and barracks by both Union and Confederate forces.

Did you know this area has a famous declassified bunker that no one knew about for 30 years? The bunker at The Greenbrier Resort would house Congress should there be a nuclear fallout. During its Eisenhower-era use it could accommodate 1,100 people in the 112,544-square-foot space. Today, you can tour the facility to get an in-depth look behind the hidden doors.
